Explanation of "Status"

• current—In this case the winner is determined directly by polls taken in the last month.
• previous—In this case, there is a tie among the polls taken in the last month, and we revert to the latest poll available before the past month to break the tie.
• 2004—If there is no means of determining the winner based on polls in the last month (or the previous poll), the result of the 2004 election for this state is used. Very often, this applies to states where zero polls have been taken, and most often the reason no polls have been taken is that the result is regarded as a forgone conclusion.
